San Diego Replacement Window Company Explains Everything You Need to Know About Double Hung Windows – BM Windows

When you’re shopping for replacement windows in San Diego, it’s helpful if you have a bit of background knowledge going in. That way, you’ll know what types of questions to ask and be able to better evaluate the various companies in San Diego that sell replacement windows and doors.

One thing that’s good to know is the various styles of replacement windows on the market. Fortunately, there are only a handful of common styles, such as single and double sliders, single and double hung windows, picture windows, casement windows, and awning windows. So, figuring out the differences between the various types of windows shouldn’t be an overwhelming task, even if you are starting from zero in your knowledge of window styles.

BM Windows, a replacement window company in San Diego has an excellent blog on their website that has a lot of great information about windows and doors. Recently, they posted a write-up about one of the most common styles of windows in Southern California: the double hung window.

In this informative blog post, they describe what a double hung window is, how it operates, the benefits of this type of window, and where in your home you should consider installing one. Here’s a recap of the information found in this blog post.

A double hung window is a vertically oriented window with two sashes, or panels. The panels are situated one on top of the other and both are moveable. The upper sash can slide down, and the lower sash slides up to let in fresh air. This differs from a single hung window, in which only one sash is able to move.

There are several benefits to double hung windows. The most notable is the fact that double hung windows have what’s called a “tilt-in sash”. This allows you to simply angle the sash inward so you can easily clean the exterior side of the window from inside your house. This is a great feature for difficult-to-access second-story windows, or for windows in places that are otherwise be hard to get to.

Another benefit of double hung windows, according to BM Windows, is the great ventilation they provide. Because both sashes are operable, so you are able to let in a good amount of fresh air by opening both the top and bottom sash at the same time. If you are replacing the windows in your home that has primarily single hung windows, BM Windows recommends that you consider replacing at least some of the single hung windows with double hung windows—especially in places like second-story rooms and in bathrooms that could use some extra ventilation.

Double hung windows are a little more pricy than single hung windows, which is one of the only downsides to these types of windows. However, the added benefits seem to make them well worth the added cost.
